In this unit, we will explore some of the preparatory activities associated with successful speech craft. Successful speakers do a lot of work preparing their materials and even generating multiple interesting topics and approaches to address topics to different types of audiences. In this unit, we will address speech purposes, the topic selection process, and the value of outlining as infrastructure concerns for successful speeches. Before you can stand up and make your presentation, we start the process of preparing a speech by determining the general purpose of the speech, the topic on which we will speak, and the specific purpose of the speech. These three actions will lay the groundwork for research, organization, and delivery. Honing our outlining skills will help in the preparation process.
