For communication in general, and public speaking specifically, there are three general purposes: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain. We also use these purposes to describe types of public speeches: informative, persuasive, and entertaining. We will use these terms as we move forward in our discussions. Determining your general purpose is necessary before we select an assignment topic.
