COMM101: Two Simple Speech Outline Samples

There is more than one way to present an outline. In our readings in this section, we learned an annotated form of outline notation. In the sample outlines presented here, you will find two simple outlines that use standard outline notation to show the alignment of the speech content. One sample is a speaking outline or keyword outline for an expository speech. The second sample is a simple process speech outline (a how-to speech).

Expository Speech: Happy Halloween

Introduction

As kids, we would count down the days until we went costume shopping, then started decorating and finally went trick-or-treating. We would anticipate how much candy we would get and if we wanted to be a scary monster, a mysterious genie or a demanding pirate.
Halloween is a kid-friendly holiday that is filled with yummy treats and spooky and yet funny tricks. Halloween has not always been the holiday we know today.
Halloween, like any other holiday, has an origin story to how it became the way it is now.

Thesis Statement: The holiday of Halloween has a spooky origin, is celebrated all around the world, and has evolved from a frightful ritual to a fun night for all ages.

Process Speech: How to Tie Your Shoes

Introduction

Did you know there is more than one way to tie your shoe laces?
Everyone needs to know how to tie their shoe laces.

Thesis Statement: Tonight, I will show you two different processes for tying your shoe laces.

Body

I. The first method is the three-step bunny ear method.

First, make a half knot.
1. Cross the laces.
2. Inserted one lace under the other.
3. Pull both laces tight.
Second, make a loop with each of the two loose lace ends.
Third, make a half knot with the two loops.

II. The second method is a five-step method.

First, make a half knot.
1. Cross the laces.
2. Inserted one lace under the other.
3. Pull both laces tight.
Second, make a loop with one of the two loose lace ends.
Third, wrap the other loose lace around the lopped lace.
Fourth, push loose lace through the gap between the looped lace and the wrap.
Finally, pull the laces tight.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you can see that there is more than one way to tie your shoe laces. I hope you give them both a try.
