- 2c Explain the stages of culture shock (CLO 4)
Culture shock is that feeling of disorientation and confusion that we feel when experiencing a culture different than our own. While ethnocentrism is the practice of judging other cultures by the values of our own culture. To counter ethnocentrism, the presenter encourages practicing cultural relativism, which involves setting aside personal biases to understand a culture on its own terms and within its own historical and situational context. Can you identify a time when you judged someone else’s cultural practice as strange? How could you have applied cultural relativism to improve your reaction?
