- 5b Assess how intercultural communication can affect interpersonal relationships in the workplace (CLO 1, CLO 3, CLO 4, CLO 5)
Culture influences every aspect of the medical experience in profound ways for both patients and providers. Culture is a determining factor in how individuals access healthcare and the quality of care they receive once they enter the system. Differences in communication styles such as directness and authority can lead to misunderstandings, even when no language barrier exists. When working in a healthcare environment, trust is essential for delivering patient-centered care. As we reflect back on our studies, can you identify a systemic barrier in your own community that might prevent someone from a different cultural background from seeking medical help?
