Retired Chief Diversity Officer of Workday Carin Taylor argues that fostering a genuine sense of belonging is the foundational element that makes diversity, equity, and inclusion possible. In this presentation, she introduces the "P.E.A.C.E." framework (Psychological Safety, Empathy, Acceptance, Connection, and Embraced) as essential for building inclusive environments where employees can thrive. Consider our discussion of relationships from Unit 3 where intercultural relationships were categorized by the contexts of professional versus personal and the level of intimacy involved. Carin Taylor’s P.E.A.C.E. tenets serve as the glue that determines whether these relationships remain surface-level or become deeply transformative. Taylor argues that belonging requires both psychological safety and the freedom to be yourself. Can you think of a time when you felt included in a group, but didn't feel safe enough to be yourself? What specific P.E.A.C.E. tenet was missing from that environment?
