Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 1: A Plan or Just a Budget?
Narrator: Hearth and Harbor Bakeries.
Narrator: Fourteen neighborhood cafés, one wholesale plant in Hamilton, and as of this morning, a supermarket contract that's starting to wobble.
Adaeze: Okay. Leo wants a five-year strategy by spring. Priya, you've got last year's plan?
Priya: I do. But honestly, it's a budget. Revenue targets by café, flour costs, a line for new ovens.
Tomás: That's how we've always planned. It worked.
Priya: It told us what we'd spend. It didn't tell us where we're going.
Daniel: Isn't strategy just head-office talk for the same thing?
Priya: Not quite. A strategy is a broad, higher-level goal. Long-term. It's the direction we want to move in to be more successful.
Adaeze: And strategic management?
Priya: Setting those long-term goals, then actually carrying out the decisions that get us there. Planned use of our resources.
Hana: Resources means people too, right? Not just ovens.
Priya: Resources and capabilities. The point is to use them so customers pick us over a competitor.
Tomás: My supermarket buyers pick whoever's cheapest.
Adaeze: And that's exactly why one contract can shake us. The real question is why some bakeries outperform others. And why we would.
Daniel: And no spreadsheet answers that.
Priya: Spreadsheets help. But it's part science and part art. You need the tools and you need creativity.
Adaeze: Then let's start there. Forget the budget for now. Let's talk direction.
Narrator: Hearth and Harbor has a budget. It doesn't have a direction yet.
Narrator: Before the team meets again, answer this one yourself.
Narrator: What would turn a five-year plan into a real strategy instead of a budget with a longer timeline?
Pause and apply
Take a plan you know, like a workplace plan, a personal budget or a career plan, and sort its items into two lists: 'budget items' and 'strategy (long-term goals and direction).' Then use the readings' definition of strategic management to write one sentence that would turn it into a real strategy.
