Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 4: A Mission Worth Baking For
Narrator: The supermarket contract is still wobbling, and Adaeze has called the team into the Toronto boardroom.
Narrator: Before anyone talks strategy, she wants one thing on paper: why Hearth & Harbor exists.
Adaeze: My father never wrote a mission statement. We just baked good bread.
Priya: The reading says a mission answers who we are and what we value. And who we're here to serve.
Hana: Then employees go on that list. Not just customers and investors.
Tomás: And the supermarket chains. Wholesale is half our business.
Kofi: My regulars on Queen Street would say we're the place that knows their name.
Priya: That's the mission side. The vision is shorter. It says where we're going.
Daniel: Something like "the best bread in Ontario"? Sounds like a poster.
Priya: A good vision should make us a little uneasy with how things are now. Stretch, not comfort.
Adaeze: So it can't just describe the bakery we already are.
Hana: And our values have to be ones people actually care about. Otherwise nobody acts on them.
Daniel: If the vision's that broad, how does it help me run a plant?
Priya: Picture a funnel. Mission at the wide top, vision in the middle, strategy at the narrow end. Then measurable goals tell us if it's working.
Adaeze: So whatever we write today has to hold up under every choice we make about wholesale.
Tomás: Including the ones I won't like.
Narrator: Adaeze caps her marker. The page is still mostly blank.
Narrator: If you were drafting Hearth & Harbor's mission and vision, which stakeholders would you name, and what would make the vision stretch the company past where it stands today?
Pause and apply
Draft a mission statement for Hearth & Harbor that names at least three stakeholder groups and two values. Then write a vision statement of one sentence that stretches the company beyond where it stands today, and explain why it would make the team uneasy with the status quo.
