Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 7: Cheapest Loaf or Best Loaf
Narrator: At Hearth & Harbor, the shaky supermarket contract has boiled the whole week down to one question.
Narrator: Do they compete on the cheapest loaf, or the best one?
Tomás: Marisol wants a lower price. If we can't beat the big plants on cost, we lose the shelf.
Daniel: Can we beat them, though? Big chains buy flour and sugar in bulk. That's procurement. They're ahead before we've mixed a thing.
Priya: Then let's pin down the term before we argue price. Competitive advantage is an attribute, or a combination of attributes, that lets us outperform our rivals.
Adaeze: So which attribute do we actually have? Not the one we wish we had.
Priya: That's why I mapped our value chain. Primary activities first: inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service.
Hana: Don't skip the support side. Firm infrastructure, human resources, technology, procurement. Our bakers' skills live there.
Daniel: I'd start with operations. If the plant ran tighter, maybe cost could be real for us.
Kofi: In the cafés nobody asks for cheap. They ask what just came out of the oven.
Tomás: Cafés aren't supermarkets, Kofi.
Priya: True. But every step should make the product worth more than it was at the step before. So where does our bread gain the most value?
Adaeze: And where could a rival copy us fastest?
Narrator: Two businesses, one value chain.
Narrator: Using the readings, which activities could give Hearth & Harbor an advantage its rivals can't easily match, and does that point to the cheapest loaf, the best loaf, or something else?
Pause and apply
Sketch Hearth & Harbor's value chain, with all five primary activities and all four support activities. For both the wholesale plant and the cafés, circle the one activity you think could become a competitive advantage, then write one sentence on whether it supports a cost-based or a differentiation-based approach.
