Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 8: Wholesale on the Matrix

Narrator: Hearth and Harbor's big supermarket contract is still wobbling. Today, Priya puts the wholesale division on a grid.

Priya: This is the GE McKinsey matrix. Wholesale is our strategic business unit. Up the side, market attractiveness. Across the bottom, competitive strength.

Tomás: Let me guess. We're stuck in the bottom left.

Priya: Not quite. Market attractiveness looks medium. Supermarket bread is a big market, but pricing trends are rough and competitive intensity is high.

Daniel: And our strength? Be honest.

Priya: Medium too. Solid quality, some loyal buyers. But our relative cost position isn't great, and our margins are thin.

Adaeze: Medium and medium. That sounds safe.

Priya: It might not be. Porter warns about the hole in the middle. We're not the cheapest, and we're not really different either.

Tomás: We've always just given the buyers whatever they ask for.

Priya: That's the trouble. Cost leadership and differentiation need different value chains.

Daniel: So if we chase cost, that's my plant. Scale, capacity utilization, fewer defects.

Hana: And if we differentiate, that's people and training, and maybe a product the chains can't easily copy.

Adaeze: Or we narrow our scope. Focus on one segment the big bakeries aren't serving.

Tomás: I'm not walking away from wholesale without a fight.

Adaeze: Nobody's asking you to. I'm asking you to choose.

Narrator: The grid shows where wholesale stands. It doesn't say which way to move.

Narrator: If you were Tomás, which generic strategy would you pick for wholesale, and what would have to change in the plant's value chain to make it work?

Pause and apply

Place Hearth and Harbor's wholesale division on a GE McKinsey grid, listing two external factors and two internal factors that support where you put it. Then choose one generic strategy for wholesale and name two value chain activities that would need to change, with one sentence explaining why.
