Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 10: Closing the Frozen Line
Narrator: At the Hamilton plant, the frozen dough line sits quiet on a Tuesday. It's losing money, and the leadership team has to decide what happens to it.
Tomás: I built that line. It just needs one more season.
Priya: Maybe. But that's a turnaround, Tomás. An attempt to make it viable again. We'd need a reason to believe it can be.
Daniel: The equipment's old. Fixing it costs more than it makes.
Adaeze: So what are our real options?
Priya: Turnaround. Divestiture, which means selling the line to someone else. Or liquidation, shutting it down and selling the assets.
Tomás: Liquidation's the least attractive choice. Everyone knows that.
Priya: Agreed. That's why I'd try to sell it first. If nobody buys, then we close it.
Hana: Whatever we pick, people lose shifts. Retrenchment usually means layoffs. We have to say that plainly.
Adaeze: It's a small retreat to the next trench, so we don't lose the whole business.
Tomás: Fine. But the crew on that line spotted the problems before head office did. Ask them what's worth saving.
Hana: Strategy from the bottom, not just from us.
Narrator: Adaeze asks Priya to look for a buyer, and she asks Tomás to bring his line crew to the next meeting.
Narrator: Bankruptcy isn't on the table, since the rest of the company can carry itself. But they still haven't decided between selling the line and shutting it down.
Narrator: If you were on this team, would you push for a turnaround, a divestiture, or a liquidation of the frozen line, and what would you need to know first?
