Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 13: The Compostable Packaging Claim
Narrator: Hearth & Harbor is close to winning back shelf space with Marisol's chain.
Narrator: One word on a new bread bag might seal the deal.
Tomás: Marisol wants a sustainability story. The new bags say compostable. We print that, we're in.
Daniel: Only in industrial composting. Most of our customers don't have that pickup. In a backyard bin, that bag just sits there.
Tomás: The supplier certified it. It's legal.
Hana: Legal is the floor, though. Laws are the minimum a society will tolerate. Our customers decide if we're ethical, not a lawyer.
Priya: It's strategic too. A misleading claim counts as a concern on social performance ratings, and it hurts us with the exact buyers we're chasing.
Adaeze: So what goes on the bag?
Kofi: My regulars ask about packaging every week. They'd rather hear the truth than a slogan.
Priya: Then let's not make it an add-on. Profit, planet, people. If the cafés run a real bag takeback, that's closer to creating shared value.
Tomás: That costs money Marisol won't pay for.
Hana: Maybe she will, if it's something she can't get anywhere else.
Adaeze: Okay. No claim until it's true where our customers live. Priya, cost the takeback. Tomás, take the honest version to Marisol.
Narrator: The bakery stayed on the right side of a line that was technically legal.
Narrator: But doing right isn't the same as doing good.
Narrator: Should Hearth & Harbor stop at an honest label, or build packaging into the strategy itself, and how would you prove to the board it's more than an add-on?
Pause and apply
Make two lists for Hearth & Harbor's packaging decision: the "doing right" moves that keep the bakery ethical, and the "doing good" moves that would count as CSR or creating shared value. Then pick one option for the board and explain, using the triple bottom line, why it's part of the strategy and not an add-on.
