Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 14: Who Carries the Plan
Narrator: The five-year plan is drafted.
Narrator: Now Hearth & Harbor has to work out who actually carries it.
Adaeze: We've got the strategy. Our people will follow it. They always have.
Hana: Loyalty got us this far, but it won't execute a plan on its own. If HR only handles payroll and compliance, we're stuck in Wave 1.
Priya: Wave 1?
Hana: Administrative HR. Wave 3 ties people strategy to business strategy. That's the seat I want at this table.
Daniel: At the plant, reviews happen once a year. By then nobody remembers what went wrong.
Hana: That's exactly the problem. Poor performance should be dealt with in real time, talked through and documented.
Kofi: My café team wants to know if anyone notices when they push the new menu.
Priya: So, pay for performance? We'd have to cost out the differentiation first.
Hana: Yes, and fix the gaps in performance management before we tie pay to it. Otherwise people stop trusting the system.
Adaeze: Pay isn't everything, though.
Hana: Agreed. Total rewards has six pieces: compensation, benefits, work-life effectiveness, recognition, performance management and talent development.
Kofi: And my people care whether it's fair. Who gets the good shifts, who gets promoted.
Hana: That's the drive to defend. Transparency and fairness build trust.
Adaeze: Okay. Hana, you're in every planning session from now on.
Narrator: Hana has her seat. Now she has to show that people practices can carry the plan.
Narrator: If you were designing this system, which drives would you target first for plant workers and for café staff, and which levers would you pull?
Pause and apply
Pick two Hearth & Harbor groups, plant workers and café staff. For each one, choose two of the four drives (acquire, bond, comprehend, defend), name the organizational lever for each drive, and list one concrete action. Then explain which total rewards element you'd fund first, and why.
