Narrator: Real-World Connections. Episode 16: Five Years on One Page

Narrator: Toronto, a Monday morning.

Narrator: Tomorrow the board sees Hearth and Harbor's first real five-year strategy. Today the team has to fit it on one page.

Adaeze: Leo told me straight. If he can't read it in two minutes, he won't back it.

Priya: Then we start at the top. Mission, vision, then long-term objectives we can actually measure.

Tomás: And wholesale gets one honest line. We're shrinking it on purpose, then rebuilding around what buyers like Marisol can't get anywhere else.

Daniel: Under that goes the plant. Cost per loaf, waste, on-time delivery. Those are my numbers to own.

Hana: People go on this page too. Not on page nine. Who leads each move, and how we keep our values when things get tight.

Adaeze: Kofi, you'll be the one carrying this out at the counter. What's missing?

Kofi: How we'll know it's working. My team needs to see progress every month, not every five years.

Priya: That's evaluation and control. We set the standards, measure what's actually happening, and decide when to correct course.

Adaeze: And if the numbers say I'm wrong, I want to hear it early. That's the deal I'm making with all of you.

Tomás: So the page isn't the finish line.

Priya: No. It's the thing we check ourselves against.

Narrator: One page, five years, and a team that agreed to be held to it.

Narrator: Now it's your turn. If you were writing Hearth and Harbor's page, which measures would you choose to tell the board the strategy is working, and what would trigger a change in course?

Pause and apply

Draft a one-page strategy for Hearth and Harbor with a mission, vision, three long-term objectives, and one strategy for each. For each objective, name one measure the board will track and the result that would make the team take corrective action.
