Upon successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

  • define linear momentum;
  • explain how momentum and force are related;
  • use Newton's Second Law of Motion in terms of momentum;
  • describe the relationship between impulse and momentum;
  • define elastic, inelastic, and totally inelastic collisions;
  • use conservation of momentum to solve linear collision problems;
  • use conservation of momentum to solve situations involving rotation; and
  • give several everyday examples of conservation of angular momentum.
