Historically speaking, public speaking is the original mass medium. Before the spread of literacy, people relied on public speakers to explain the news of the day.
The ability to make public presentations is a highly valued skill in the workplace and society at large. Public speaking skills are valuable when applying for jobs and on the job for explaining and persuading others. Effective public speaking makes it possible for us to enact our civic responsibility to participate actively as members of a democratic society. The study of public speaking teaches us not what to think but how to think, and in so doing equips us to critically evaluate the arguments of others.
