We know from our unit readings that trait anxiety is personality-based. People with high trait anxiety feel nervous about communicating across a wide variety of contexts, regardless of who they are talking to or what the situation is. If someone is shy in a one-on-one setting, they are likely to be shy in a large group setting as well. Dr. Sunny explains that this type of anxiety may stem from self-consciousness, negative self-evaluation, and preoccupation with evaluation from others. In a later video in this section, Dr. Sunny will provide strategies for managing communication apprehension, like trait anxiety.
